The 35th Rose Bowl Game, held January 1, 1949, pitted the Northwestern Wildcats versus the Cal Golden Bears. The Wildcats and the Bears played tug-of-war before the Wildcats were able to squeeze out a 20-14 victory after an 88-yard drive.
